Suzy Shields

2026 School Nursing is my Superpower Nominee:

Suzy Shields, Burlington public schools, Mass

Our school nurse leader may have stepped into her role this year, but her impact has already been extraordinary. From the very first day, she created a sense of safety, trust, and calm that students and staff rely on every single day. She brings a unique set of “nurse superpowers” that make her truly deserving of recognition. One of her greatest strengths is her ability to connect with students. She has a remarkable way of making every child feel seen, heard, and cared for—whether they come in with a scraped knee, a chronic health need, or just a tough day. Her office is more than a health room; it’s a safe space where students know they will be treated with kindness and respect. She also has an incredible instinct for what students and staff need, often anticipating concerns before they’re even voiced. From managing complex care plans to responding calmly in emergencies, she brings confidence and clarity to every situation. Teachers and staff know they can count on her not just for medical support, but for guidance, reassurance, and collaboration. Her communication is another superpower. She explains health information in ways that students understand and supports families with compassion and professionalism. She builds strong relationships with parents, helping bridge the gap between school and home to ensure every child’s well-being. Beyond daily care, she is committed to creating a healthier school community. She promotes wellness, encourages good habits, and fosters an environment where both students and staff can thrive. She leads by example, showing patience, resilience, and genuine care in everything she does. In such a short time, she has made a lasting difference in our school. Her dedication, empathy, and leadership truly set her apart. That is why we believe she should win—because her “superpowers” positively impact our entire school community every day.
