The Only Nurse in the Building: Understanding and Addressing Isolation in School Nursing
School nurses typically practice as the only healthcare professional on site, without the peer group that teachers, administrators, and office staff take for granted. This session examines two distinct forms of isolation in school nursing, clinical and role-based, and draws on the professional literature to show that the experience is structural rather than personal. Participants will leave with practical strategies for establishing clinical consultation resources beyond their school and professional connection within it, along with a single concrete action to take that week.

The speakers are:
Jacqui Falco, MSN, RN, NCSN
Jacqui is a practicing school nurse, Nationally Certified School Nurse, and 2024 Massachusetts School Nurse of the Year. She began her nursing career in cardiac and medical-surgical nursing after starting her professional career in training and development.
As a district resource nurse and nurse mentor, Jacqui has built and led onboarding programs, clinical resources, policies, tools, and training for school nursing teams. She has taught and mentored nurses across experience levels and developed systems to support consistent school nursing practice. Her work caring for students has also been recognized by families in her district.
Jacqui has been invited to present her work at the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization conference twice. She holds a BA from Emmanuel College, a BSN from Regis College, and an MSN in Health Care Leadership from Granite State College.
Karlee Dana, MSN, RN
Karlee is a practicing school nurse who began her nursing career in pediatric intensive care and inpatient medical and behavioral nursing. She also brings a background in event planning, where organization, logistics, coordination, and attention to detail were central to her work.
As a district resource nurse and nurse mentor, Karlee has built and implemented onboarding programs, clinical resources, training, and practical tools for school nurses across experience levels. She has taught, mentored, and supported nurses in health offices, as well as agency, substitute, and 1:1 nursing roles, and served as a clinical resource for her team. Her work caring for students has also been recognized by families in her district.
Karlee has been invited to present her work at the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization conference twice and has exhibited at the New England School Nurse Conference. She holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Business Studies from Providence College, a BSN from Northeastern University, and an MSN in Health Care Leadership from the University of New Hampshire.
Nursing contact hours (0.5 contact hours for each workshop) are provided by Northeastern University School of Nursing, accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
